Changing Gender Roles

Women are expected to do so much and to not fall short of those expectations when in a relationship. Although it’s 2016 and women are more independent than ever, women still find themselves subjected to gender roles in relationship. For example, do men really think the kitchen is a woman’s place? A woman needs to prepare dinner and wash the dishes for you every night after you both have worked 9-5?

As for men, they’re in charge of bringing home the bacon, right? Studies show that women are on the rise as the breadwinner and that’s okay. However, disrespecting him because you pay the bills is not. Neither is making him feel less of a man because you make more money.

Placing gender roles or expectations on the your significant partner will get you nowhere. Team work makes the dream work. Break out of the gender roles. Usually it’s the mom attending the parent-teacher meetings, picking the child up from school, make their lunches and shopping for the kids. More than likely the dad is the one giving the kids their allowance and determining if the child can attend a school event.

Both parties play a major role in the household, but not everything has to have a certain dictator to it. You have to be willing to work with your partner or they could end up resenting you. Both parties can win if you compromise. If you’re wanting to break out of those gender roles try trading places for a day and taking on roles you usually don’t. Break the cycle before it continues with your kids and they find themselves being “Susie the homemaker” or “Calvin the unhappy accountant.” The media has a way of painting pictures of what it’s supposed to be like, but make your own life and be happy.
